PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Four members of the Plymouth State University men’s soccer team were honored by the Little East Conference Monday with selection to the 2004 All-Star Team, as voted by the league’s head coaches.
Three Panthers were named to the All-LEC First Team – sophomore back Bryan Biederman (Holderness, N.H./Plymouth Reg. HS), senior goalkeeper Dan Custance (Holderness, N.H./Wakefield, Mass. HS) and senior midfielder Sebastian Rodriguez (San Jose, Costa Rica/Plymouth Reg. HS). In addition, junior midfielder Steve Balgach (Fairfield, Conn.) was an All-LEC Second Team pick. It is the second All-LEC selection for Rodriguez and the first for the other three.
These four standouts were the leaders of a Panther squad that will participate in this week’s ECAC New England Tournament, the seventh post-season berth in the last eight years. PSU, 9-7-1 overall, finished second in the LEC during the regular season and was knocked out of the conference tournament in the semifinals.
A 5’11”, 175-pound center back, Biederman was the stabilizing force to a Panther defense that allowed only 21 goals in 17 games. He is the only PSU player to start all 17 games and held up a defense that was riddled with injuries. Biederman was twice selected LEC Defensive Player of the Week this season.
A 6’0”, 190-pound keeper, Custance was named All-Conference in his first season on the team. He joined the Panthers in the off-season, and went on to post three shutouts and a 1.22 goals against average in 12 starts. Custance ranked fourth in the league in both goals against average and saves percentage (.784), and was the LEC Defensive Player of the Week once late in the season.
A 5’8”, 155-pound midfielder/forward, Rodriguez was an All-LEC First Team choice this season after earning Second Team honors a year ago. He led the Panthers with five assists and tied for second with nine points. Rodriguez finished seventh in the conference in assists this season, and improved his career totals to 11 goals and nine assists.
A 6’0”, 175-pounder, Balgach started the season as a back before moving to midfield to help the team. A strong all-around player, he ended up fourth on the team in scoring with a goal and four assists. Balgach is a three-year starter at defense/midfield who has contributed two goals and seven assists.
