WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. – Senior Ed Farinato (Medford, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal 47 seconds into overtime Monday night to give Franklin Pierce College a 3-2 victory over Plymouth State University in an ECAC Northeast Conference hockey game at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
Freshman Mike Anderson (Keene, N.H.) also scored twice for the winners, and senior goalie Andy Tinti (Buffalo, N.Y.) made 42 saves to register the win. Franklin Pierce improves to 5-16-0 overall and 2-14-0 in conference play, while PSU, which had a 44-24 advantage in shots on goal, dropped its fourth straight to fall to 7-14-0 overall and 3-11-0 in the Northeast.
Anderson scored the only goal of the first period during a four-on-four situation to stake the Ravens to the lead, and he gave the visitors a two-goal lead with his second of the game at 4:27 of the middle frame.
Plymouth State battled back to tie the game. The Panthers outshot the Ravens 21-5 in the second period, but managed only a goal by sophomore Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass.), his team-leading 14th of the season with less than three minutes to go in the period. PSU then had a 14-7 advantage in shots in the third period, and managed to tie it up at the 9:35 mark on sophomore Paul Feeney’s (Lowell, Mass.) goal.
PSU freshman goalie Trevor Cherry (Greenland, N.H.) made 21 saves, including two in overtime, but Farinato finished off the Panthers with a rebound goal in the first minute of OT.
PSU is back in action Wednesday at Waterville Valley with a non-conference match-up against Tufts University (6:00 p.m.). FPC returns home to host Stonehill on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.).
