BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Freshman Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.) scored four goals and junior Sam Harding (South Berwick, Maine) added three Saturday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State College men’s lacrosse team to a 12-5 non-conference victory over the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
The victory was PSC’s first of the season (1-3) and the first for new Panther head coach John Pynchon. MMA is also 1-3 this spring.
The Mariners took a 1-0 lead at the end of the first quarter before PSC responded with three unanswered goals in the second. The Panthers were up 3-2 at halftime, pulled ahead 8-5 after three quarters and scored the only four goals of the final frame to secure the win.
In addition to Gagnon and Harding, junior Eric Gobiel (Chelmsford, Mass.) was a multiple goal-scorer for PSC with two goals and an assist. Senior Ken McGuire (Wayland, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and two assists, freshman Bobby Dabrieo (Woburn, Mass.) added a goal and an assist, and senior Kevin Finnerty (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored once. Sophomore Steve Skinner (Hingham, Mass.) contributed three assists for the Panthers.
PSC had a strong performance in the ground balls department with 46, according to Coach Pynchon, led by 10 from sophomore Matt McCormick (Sudbury, Mass.).
Freshman Michael Rodrick (Plaistow, N.H.) was solid in goal for PSC, making 13 saves.
The Panthers begin the Little East Conference part of the schedule this Monday (Mar. 31) with a 3:30 p.m. contest at Salem State. PSC and Salem State were picked fifth and seventh, respectively, in the LEC pre-season coaches poll.
