WENHAM, Mass. – Freshman Matt Smith scored his third goal of the game with three minutes left in the second overtime Wednesday afternoon to
lead Gordon College past Plymouth State College in a non-conference men’s soccer match, 3-2.
The outcome snapped PSC’s four-game winning streak and dropped the Panthers to 7-6-2 overall, while the Fighting Scots improve to 13-3-1.
The contest was a see-saw battle. Smith gave Gordon a 1-0 lead at the break with his first goal in the 42nd minute. The Panthers tied it at 1-1 in the
59th minute when sophomore Sebastian Rodriguez (San Jose, Costa Rica) tallied his fourth goal of the season, with junior Michael Cantelli (Raymond, N.H.)
assisting on the play. PSC took a 2-1 lead with 17 minutes left in regulation on an unassisted goal by senior Sal Friello (West Haven, Conn.), his fourth of the
season and his third straight game with a goal.
Smith tied the game for Gordon with less than 10 minutes left in regulation, and then won it in the second overtime. PSC had beaten Gordon 1-0 last
year in the semifinals of the ECAC New England Tournament.
Shots on goal in the game were even at nine apiece. PSC junior keeper Brad Wilby (Haddonfield, N.J.) recorded four saves while Gordon freshman
Scott Brooks posted five saves.
PSC wraps up the regular season Saturday (Nov. 2) with a Little East Conference home game against UMass Dartmouth (1:00 p.m.). The Panthers,
who have clinched a spot in the LEC Tournament semifinals next Wednesday (Nov. 6), can still finish anywhere between first and fourth in the conference,
depending upon results of several LEC games the rest of this week. Gordon opens play at home in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament on
