Spanish maestro Francesc de Paula Soler will be presented in concert Friday, Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Silver Center for the Arts.
Maestro Soler will also present a conference on the literature and music of Spain throughout history, and a master class, both open to the public.
Known as “The Poet of the Guitar,” Maestro Soler’s wide international performance schedule has brought critics to hail him as one of the most notable names of the guitar world.
Born into a well-known Spanish artistic family, Soler began piano studies at the age of 6. At age 11, he began to study guitar and received highest honors in the prestigious Conservatorio Superior de Musica of Barcelona, Spain. He continued his postgraduate work with Andres Segovia, also studying with Narciso Yepes and many of the most important Latin American guitarists.
Soler’s program at PSU will present music by composers representative of Spain and Latin America, including Francisco Tarrega, Joaquan Rodrigo, Antonio Riz-Pipa and Pablo Escobar.
Following the intermission Soler will turn to more contemporary works by European, English and American composers such as Heitor Villa-Lobos, Salvador Bacarisse, John W. Duarte and Jerry Reed. Maestro Soler will also perform several of his own compositions.
Soler has earned many honors and awards as well as critical acclaim. “Soler showed himself to be unusually sensitive to color and the rhapsodic rise and fall of the phrases … he played dazzling solos with his left hand on the fingerboard, unleashed a battery of right-hand percussive effects on the body of the guitar, and engaged in some creative pitch-bending on blues-tinged melodies,” wrote the Washington Post.
Free tickets are available at the Silver Center Box Office, (603) 535-ARTS.
Maestro Soler will also present a conference on the literature and music of Spain and Latin America, and a master class, both open to the public.
The conference will be held from 1-3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2 at Heritage Commons and the master class for guitar students will be Friday morning at the Silver Center.
