BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Sophomore Amanda Gutowski (Conway, N.H.) and senior Jill Matteson (Chatham, Mass.) scored two goals apiece
Saturday as Plymouth State College defeated Bridgewater State College 4-1 in Little East Conference field hockey game at rain-soaked Swenson Field.
The Panthers raced to a 2-0 lead behind a pair of goals by Gutowski, maintaining the two-goal advantage at halftime before going on the win. It was
PSC’s sixth straight win, improving its record to 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the LEC, while Bridgewater State drops to 7-4 and 3-3.
Matteson, who assisted on Gutowski’s second goal, extended the Panther lead to 3-0 eight minutes into the second half with her first of the game, with
an assist from senior Katie Dodge (Sanbornton, N.H.). The Bears got on the board with 16:44 remaining on a goal by junior Kacie Hinchliffe (New Bedford,
Mass.), but Matteson promptly responded with her second of the day, with senior Marushka Eddy (Nantucket, Mass.) assisting, to give PSC the 4-1 win.
Matteson takes over the team scoring lead with five goals and two assists, and Gutowski is second with five goals and one assist.
PSC had a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal. Panther keeper Ellen Ward (Thorndike, Maine) and Bears goalie Lauren Mazzola (Westwood, Mass.)
each registered six saves.
The Bears return to action Thursday (Oct. 17) when they travel to Salve Regina. PSC is also back in action Thursday at Endicott (3:30 p.m.).
