African American Film Series, “Cabin in the Sky”

Cabin in the Sky is a 1943 musical fable about the forces of good and evil. Directed by Vincent Minnelli, the film features Ethel Waters, Lena Horne, Eddie “Rochester” Anderson and Louis Armstrong. “The incomparable Ethel Waters stars as Petunia Jackson, a poor but devout woman burdened with a shiftless husband, Little Joe (Anderson). When Little Joe is critically wounded in a fight, the forces of heaven and hell battle for his soul. Petunia finds that she needs more than prayer to keep her beloved Joe out of the Devil’s clutches. Lena Horne plays Georgia Brown, sent by Lucifer to seduce Joe into sinning his way into hell.” –Liner notes from MGM/Turner Laserdisc. International Film Series, “Autumn Tale”

The International Film Series at Plymouth State College presents Autumn Tale at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 18 at Frost Academic Commons on School Street. The 1998 film is presented in French with English subtitles.

Autumn Tale is the final installment in Eric Rohmer’s “Tales of the Four Seasons” quartet of films. It examines romance and matchmaking among the middle-aged. The target is widowed vintner Magali (Beatrice Romand), alone after the departure of her grown children. Her best friend (Marie Riviere) plots to pair her with a friendly businessman (Alain Libolt), while her son’s girlfriend (Alexia Portal) schemes to introduce her to a high school philosophy teacher.
