HENNIKER, N.H. – Sophomore Mike Carmody (Falmouth, Maine) scored the go-ahead goal on the power play with 3:15 remaining in the third period Tuesday evening as 11th-ranked New England College held off Plymouth State University, 5-3, in non-conference men’s ice hockey action.
The upset-minded Panthers battled back from 1-0 and 2-1 first-period deficits to take a 3-2 lead three minutes into the third period. NEC answered with the tying goal 44 seconds later, and the teams remained deadlocked until Carmody’s winning goal. The Pilgrims added an empty-netter with four seconds remaining.
NEC, which is ranked No. 11 in the current US College Hockey Online Division III poll, remained unbeaten at 6-0-0, while PSU drops to 4-3-1.
Freshman Brian Shea (Bow, N.H.) scored an unassisted shorthanded goal to give the Pilgrims an early 1-0 lead, and PSU sophomore Deni Bojadzic (Gothenburg, Sweden) answered five minutes later with the first of two goals on the evening to tie the game at 1-1. Junior Jon Bellonio (Guilford, Conn.) gave NEC the lead back at 15:27 of the first period, a goal that stood up until sophomore Chris Cadieux (Nashua, N.H.) evened the score at 2-2 at the 14:24 mark of the second period.
Bjodazic and Cadieux combined for a goal for PSU at 3:25 of the third period, but the only Panther lead of the night lasted less than a minute when Bellonio notched his second of the game to tie it at 3-3 and set things up for Carmody.
NEC finished with a 47-22 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) had another busy night in the Panther net, making 42 saves, while junior Scott Gray (Pickering, Ont.) finished with 19 stops.
PSU returns home to host Suffolk University Thursday at Waterville Valley (6:00 p.m.) in a non-conference game, the last home contest of the month. The Panthers complete competition for the semester Sunday with an ECAC Northeast Conference game at Nichols (8:00 p.m.) NEC wraps up the semester Friday at ECAC East rival Saint Anselm College (7:00 p.m.)
