KEENE, N.H. – Keene State College scored five runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday to post a dramatic 11-10 come-from-behind victory over rival Plymouth State College in a Little East Conference baseball game.
Trailing 10-5, the Owls erupted for five runs on six consecutive hits with two outs in the eighth. Following RBI hits from Ben Tyer (Lee, Mass.), John Trubiano (Keene, N.H.) and Justin Hickman (Mont Vernon, N.H.), KSC’s Mike Masseur (Warwick, R.I.) singled to left to score Hickman with the tying run, and Kelly Charbono (Enfield, N.H.) knocked in masseur with the go-ahead run with a double to left-center.
The Panthers scored five runs in the second inning on the way to building a 10-2 lead after four and a half innings. Juniors Matt Price (Epping, N.H.) and Jay Zinis (Manchester, N.H./West) had three hits each while classmate Robbie Burr (Concord, N.H.) cracked his fifth home run of the season for PSC. Junior Scott Hodsdon (Somersworth, N.H.) along with Zinis and Burr all finished with a pair of RBI.
James Slack (Manchester, N.H.) picked up the win for the Owls in relief of starter Corey Hartson (Merrimack, N.H.). Slack (2-1) pitched 5.2 innings, giving up four runs and striking out six. Buzzy Francis (Bedford, N.H.) worked a scoreless ninth inning to record the save.
PSC starter Owen Burke (Sanbornton, N.H.) pitched well through six innings, departing with a 10-5 lead. Senior Nate Provencher (Wilton, N.H.) came on for the last two innings and took the loss (1-3).
It was the sixth win in the last seven games for Keene State (12-9, 3-2 LEC). PSC drops to 6-12 overall (0-5 LEC).
PSC returns home to host New England College Wednesday in a non-conference twinbill (2:00 p.m.). Keene State will be at Franklin Pierce on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.).
