FORT MYERS, Fla. – Lawrence University (Wisc.) scored 23 runs on 26 hits Thursday en route to sweeping a baseball doubleheader from Plymouth State University, 11-6 and 12-5, in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. The Panthers dip to 1-7 on their spring trip, while Lawrence improves to 4-4.
PSU jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opener, but the Vikings came back with three runs in the third inning and six more in the fourth, highlighted by a grand slam by R.J. Rosenthal. PSU senior Josh Forest (Manchester, N.H./Trinity) took the loss to fall to 0-2. Junior Matt Gabellieri (Lincoln, R.I.) and sophomore Scott Begalle (Rumney, N.H.) had solid games at the plate, as Gabellieri went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI and Begalle was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.
The Panthers again took the lead (3-1) in the nightcap, but the Vikings exploded for seven runs in the third inning to take an insurmountable advantage. Senior Mike Bradbury (Chatham, Mass.) worked the first three innings and was saddled with the loss. Gabellieri and freshman Trevor Hall (New Boston, N.H.) did some damage at the plate for PSU; Gabellieri had two hits, including a home run, and three RBI, and Hall recorded three hits, including a double, and an RBI.
PSU wraps up the spring trip with two games Friday – a 9:00 a.m. meeting against the University of the South and a 12 noon match-up vs. Washington & Jefferson College.
