PLYMOUTH, N.H. – One of the starting defenders on the Plymouth State University men’s soccer team was recognized by the Little East Conference Monday for his performance in a pair of Panthers victories last week.
Sophomore Matt Verrecchia (South Kingstown, R.I./The Prout School) was named LEC Men’s Defensive Player of the Week. He helped the Panthers to a pair of road victories over the weekend, a 4-1 conference triumph Saturday at UMass Boston and a 3-1 non-conference decision Sunday at Bridgewater State.
A 6’2”, 208-pound back, Verrecchia played exceptional defense for PSU as the Panthers allowed only eight shots to UMB on Saturday and nine shots to BSC on Sunday. Verrecchia also contributed an assist on the game-winning goal in the LEC victory over UMB.
Plymouth State’s defense is ranked second in the conference in goals allowed (0.83 per game) and goals against average (0.78).
PSU, 5-0-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the LEC, was ranked ninth in New England in last week’s regional coaches poll. The Panthers visit Endicott College for a game this Wednesday (7:00 p.m.) before returning home to host Eastern Connecticut in a key LEC match-up (3:00 p.m.)
