Martinez Honored for Third Straight Week

December 14th, 1999 by Adam

PLYMOUTH, NH – For the third week in a row, the co-captain on the Plymouth State College men’s basketball team has been honored by the Little East
Conference for his outstanding play.

Junior forward Tony Martinez (Barnstead, NH) was named to the LEC Weekly Honor Roll after helping PSC to a 2-1 week. Martinez was also on the
Honor Roll after the opening two games of the season, and was the LEC Player of the Week seven days ago.

A 6’3” forward, Martinez averaged 17.7 points and 9.3 rebounds in three games, scoring in double figures in all three contests and posting two
‘double-doubles.” He shot 50 percent from the floor (22-of-44) and added seven assists and three steals.

Martinez leads the Panthers and ranks second in the league with an 18.5 scoring average on the season. He also leads the team and ranks fourth in the
league in field goal percentage (.504), and is also third on the team and 10th in the LEC in rebounding (7.3 rpg).

Many people thought PSC was in for a rebuilding year after losing the head coach and four starters after last season, including a First Team All-America, but
first-year head coach John Scheinman has the new-look Panthers playing good basketball. The Panthers’ 6-2 start matches last year’s record after eight games,
and with the young players gaining more experience, it should be an exciting second half of the season.

After the usual break for final exams and the holidays, PSC returns to action with a non-conference game on Wednesday, Jan. 6th, at New England College
(6 p.m.), where Scheinman served as head coach the last three years. The Panthers resume LEC play at Foley Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan. 8th, against Rhode
Island College (3:00 p.m.).

PANTHER NOTES: With the season a little less than half over, the Panthers are leading the Little East in scoring margin (+17.2), rebounding (49.8 rpg),
rebounding margin (+9.9), field goal percentage (.488) and field goal percentage defense (.354). PSC is also second in scoring offense (88.0 ppg) and three-point
shooting pct. (.355)….Senior Shannon Gallagher (Plymouth, NH) joins Martinez in the double-figure scoring department, checking in at a 12.8 clip to rank 13th in
the LEC. He is also the team leader and sixth in the league in rebounding (8.6 rpg), seventh in FG percentage (.481), and 13th in assists (2.6 apg)….Other Panthers
among the LEC leaders include sophomore Jason Blackburn (Hudson, MA), who is averaging 9.8 points and ninth in the league in rebounding (7.8 rpg); senior
JaModi Robinson (Framingham, MA), who is fifth in the LEC with 3.5 assists/game; freshman Kenny Stewart (Londonderry, NH), 13th with 3.3 assists/game;
and freshman Mark Dunham (Derry, NH), who is third in three-point FG percentage (.361) and sixth in steals (2.0/gm).
