MATHCOUNTS State Champions Headed for Nationals

Plymouth State College hosted the MATHCOUNTS state finals, a national math competition for seventh- and eighth-graders. Eighteen New Hampshire schools and approximately100 students were represented. The event was sponsored by, Laconia Savings Bank, New Hampshire Teachers of Mathematics, NH Society of Professional Engineers and Tirey and Associates.

The four finalists were: Shujun (Kevin) Feng of Durham from Oyster River Middle School; Patrick Smyth of Exeter from Cooperative Middle School; Taige (Tiger) Zhou of Hanover from Richmond Middle School; and Richard Walsh of Bedford from McKelvie Middle School. These four finalists will represent New Hampshire at the national competition in Chicago, Ill. May 8-11. Additionally, each received a $2,000 scholarship to Plymouth State College.

Should these students apply to Plymouth State College after high school and be eligible, they are guaranteed the $2,000 Achievement Scholarship in Mathematics, which will then be credited toward their tuition costs. This scholarship is renewable each year, making $8,000 available to each student over a four-year-period.
