WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Semir Mehmedovic (Franklin, N.H.) notched the game winning goal the 101st minute of action Wednesday night, firing a crisp shot in traffic into the goal to give visiting Plymouth State University a 2-1 overtime decision over the host Lancers of Worcester State College at Coughlin Field.
Plymouth State, ranked 10th in this week’s New England Division III poll, improves to 6-1-1 overall with its third overtime win this season. Worcester State ended its modest two-game winning streak and fell to 3-6.
Worcester State’s Eric Owens (Newton, N.H.) opened the scoring in the 10th minute, drilling a 30 yard shot from straight out into the top corner of the goal. Mehmedovic evened the score with his first goal of the contest just 54 seconds before the end of the first half; burying a direct kick.
With both teams posting chances in the second half neither team could put the contest away so the game went to overtime where the sophomore striker dribbled through traffic and launched the game winning score.
Albert Jenkins (Thomaston, GA) stopped eight shots in the loss, while counterpart Tyler Shute (Deerfield, NH) stopped seven Lancer attempts on the night for the victors.
Worcester State will be back on the pitch on Saturday when they return to MASCAC action traveling to Fitchburg State. Plymouth State returns home to host Little East Conference rival Keene State Saturday in the Homecoming game at Panther Field (5:00 p.m.)
