CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A pair of third-period goals helped propel MIT to a 4-2 victory over Plymouth State University Saturday afternoon in a non-conference women’s ice hockey game, as the Engineers completed the weekend sweep of the two-game series.
Senior Mary Harding (Wilton, Conn.), who posted a hat-trick in Friday night’s 7-0 MIT win, collected three assists for the winners on Saturday. MIT improves to 5-11-0 overall and 4-11-0 in varsity games, while the Panthers fell to 2-14-0 overall 0-11-0 in their inaugural season of varsity play.
Plymouth State opened the scoring in the first period when freshman Kristen Leach (Smithfield, R.I.) converted a power play goal to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. MIT evened the contest two minutes later with an unassisted tally by junior Raffaela Wakeman (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.)
The score remained unchanged until late in the second stanza when the Panthers posted another power-play goal to regain the lead. Sophomore Amanda Kreamer converted a pass by freshman Alyssa Hovanec (Marlborough, Conn.) for the goal at 16:14, but sophomore Stephanie Brenman (Newton, Mass.) got the equalizer for MIT less than two minutes later.
MIT carried the momentum into the final frame as both of its goals were scored during the first six minutes. Freshman Kelcie Abraham (Toronto, Ont.) notched the eventual game-winner at 4:15, and senior Amanda Hunter (Cornwall, Conn.) added an insurance tally at 5:49.
The hosts finished with a 67-15 advantage in shots on goal. PSU sophomore Lindsay DeLorie (Holliston, Mass.) made a whopping 63 saves, while freshmen Maria Prus (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Julia Roberts (Rockville, Md.) combined on 13 saves for MIT.
Up next for Plymouth State will be a visit to North Country Community College in Saranac Lake, N.Y. on Saturday, Feb. 3. MIT will return to ECAC East action on Friday, Feb. 9 when it hosts UMass-Boston.
