LINCOLN, N.H. – Plymouth State College senior Tim Mitchell (Ashland, Mass.) and sophomore Whitney Swaffield (Wolfeboro, N.H.) were the individual winners Sunday in the giant
slalom at the Brown University Winter Carnival at Loon Mountain.
Mitchell, who swept the slalom on Saturday and the GS on Sunday for the second straight weekend, led the Panthers to a runner-up finish among 10 schools in the men’s GS
standings. Colby-Sawyer won the men’s division, followed by PSC in second, UMass in third, Boston College fourth, and New England College fifth. There were 85 skiers in the men’s race.
Swaffield captured her second straight individual GS victory, leading PSC to a sixth place among 11 schools in the women’s team standings. Swaffield has finished in the top five in
five straight races. Brown University edged Boston College for the women’s team winner, followed by UMass, Colby-Sawyer, Smith, and PSC. There were 58 skiers in the women’s race.
Joining Mitchell for PSC in the top 15 in the men’s race were sophomore Garrett Lashar (Kingfield, Maine) in 10th, senior EJ Cheney (Bethel, Maine) in 12th, and freshmen Tyler
Barlow (South Burlington, Vt.) in 14th.
After Swaffield, the top PSC women’s finisher was freshman Carol McCarthy (East Rochester, N.H.) in 29th, her best performance of the season.
The Panthers resume competition next weekend at the Boston College Winter Carnival at Ascutney Mountain (Vt.).
