WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. – Freshman Travis Moore (Simcoe, Ont.) made 39 saves Saturday afternoon to lead Morrisville State (N.Y.) College to a 3-0 victory over Plymouth State University and a weekend sweep of the two-game non-conference men’s ice hockey series at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
Moore stymied the Panthers all weekend, stopping 75 of the 78 shots he faced. He had at least 10 saves in all six periods over the weekend, making 14-11-14 saves by period Saturday to record his first collegiate shutout. He had made 36 saves in Friday night’s 6-3 Mustang victory.
Sophomore Keith Williams (Whitesboro, N.Y.) led the visitors with a pair of power play goals, both assisted by juniors Joe Herman (Congers, N.Y.) and Matt Damskov (Spokane, Wash.). Freshman Andrew Alarie (Carlisle, Ont.) also connected on his second goal of the season.
Special teams were again a factor in the contest, as PSU was 0-for-5 on the power play and MSC was 2-for-8 with the man advantage. The Panthers came up empty on 15 power play attempts on the weekend, while the Mustangs were 6-for-15.
PSU outshot Morrisville 14-7 in the first period Saturday, but trailed 1-0 on Williams’ first goal. Williams added his second PPG at 4:09 of the second period, Alarie made it 3-0 a minute and 21 seconds later, and it stayed that way through the end of the second period.
The Panthers had a 14-7 advantage again in the third period, but couldn’t put on past Moore. PSU freshman Mick Fitzpatrick (Lancaster, N.Y.) had a solid game in the Panther net in his first career start, finishing with 26 saves.
Plymouth State opens ECAC Northeast Conference play this Monday with a 7:10 p.m. contest at Stonehill. Morrisville State, a former junior college team in its first season as an NCAA Division III Independent, returns home to host Potsdam State and Brockport State in doubleheader next Friday and Saturday, both games at 7:00 p.m.
