ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior Gavin Thomas scored on a direct kick from about 30 yards away late in the second half Sunday afternoon to lift host Nazareth College to a 1-1 overtime tie with Plymouth State University on the second day of the Doug May Memorial Soccer Classic at Golden Flyer Stadium, hosted by Nazareth.
Thomas’ goal came in the game’s 79th minute and sent Nazareth to its second tie of the weekend tournament. The Golden Flyera also settled for a 1-1 tie with Allegheny Saturday, while the Panthers earned a 1-0 win over Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) on Saturday.
Plymouth State’s goal against Nazareth came in the 42nd minute as freshman Semir Mehmedovic (Franklin, N.H.) deflected a cross from sophomore Takeru Tanikawa (Shizuoka, Japan/ Tilton Prep-NH) into the goal. The score stayed 1-0 until Thomas blasted a high shot that skipped off the fingers of PSU freshman goalie Tyler Shute (Deerfield, N.H.) before finding the back of the net.
Neither team was able to score the rest of the way, including two overtimes. Nazareth had a 13-6 edge in shots with Shute making seven saves for Plymouth State. Nazareth goalie Alex Kilroy made two saves.
Nazareth is coached by former PSU captain and All-Star defender Danny Gilbertson.
Plymouth State, 1-0-1, returns home to host Gordon College in the home opener Wednesday at Panther Field (4:00 p.m.)
