WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. – Freshman Eric Schottke (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored two goals and assisted on another Saturday evening as Nichols College skated past Plymouth State University, 6-2, in a non-conference men’s ice hockey game at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
The Bison held a 35-11 advantage in shot on goal through two periods but held only a 3-0 lead. Senior Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass.) put the Panthers on the board in the opening two minutes of the third period to cut the margin to 3-1, but Schottke tallied a power play goal for Nichols two minutes later to take the wind out of the Panthers’ sails. The Bison added a pair of goals 44 second apart later in the third and coasted home with the win.
Nichols, which had 14 freshmen among its 18 skaters as well as a freshman goalie, ended up outshooting the Panthers 55-21 for the game. Sophomore goalie Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) kept PSU in the game, finishing with a career-high 49 saves.
Freshmen Jeff Bieber (Littleton, Col.) and Schottke gave the Bison a 2-0 first-period lead, with Bieber’s goal coming on the power play. Nichols had five power play chances in the middle frame, including a five-minute advantage after a PSU major penalty, but it was a short-handed goal by freshman Anthony Monte (Chicago, Ill.) that put the Bison up 3-0 going into the third period.
After Kane and Schottke exchanged the early goals, freshmen Glenn Cacaro (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Cole Ruwe (Pekin, Ill.) wrapped up the scoring for Nichols. Senior Paul Feeney (Lowell, Mass.) added a goal for PSU with one second left in the game.
Nichols freshman goalie Keith Fink (Easton, Md.) earned the win with a 19-save effort.
PSU, 0-1-1, is right back in action Monday at Waterville Valley with its ECAC Northeast Conference opener against Stonehill (6:00 p.m.) Nichols also hosts Stonehill in its next outing, which is next Saturday (8:30 p.m.)
