PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Fourteenth-ranked Plattsburgh State University scored three third-period goals to pull away from Plymouth State University Saturday evening en route to a 5-2 non-conference victory in ECAC men’s ice hockey action.at Stafford Ice Arena.
Plattsburgh, which was upset Friday night by Curry College, rebounded with the win Saturday evening to improve to 11-6-1 overall. Plymouth State drops to 7-5-1.
The hosts had a decisive advantage in shots on goal in the first (17-3) and second (16-7) periods, but had to settle for 1-1 and 2-2 deadlocks during the two intermissions. Sophomore Trevor Mallon scored the game-winner for the Cardinals at the 7:54 mark of the third period, and C.J. Tozzo and Dave Friel added insurance goals at 11:26 and 15:54, respectively, the latter on a power play.
Each team got on the board in the first minute of the game, with senior Rory Nickerson (West Chatham, Mass.) scoring for Plymouth State from classmates Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass.) and Paul Feeney (Lowell, Mass.) 35 seconds in, and Mike Thomson answering for Plattsburgh State 20 seconds later. Thomson gave the Cardinals the lead in the second period with his second of the contest, but Kane evened the score at 2-2 with a power play goal from senior Nick DeBaggis (Topsfield, Mass.) at the 10-minute mark.
Plattsburgh ended up with a 47-19 advantage in shots on goal. Chris Molinaro was credited with 17 saves in the win for the Cardinals, while sophomore Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) stopped 42 pucks in net for the Panthers.
Plymouth State returns to ECAC Northeast Conference action Wednesday with a visit to Southern New Hampshire (7:30 p.m.) Plattsburgh returns to action on Friday when it travels to Potsdam for a 7 p.m. start.
