SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Springfield College scored three goals in the first 12 minutes of the game Sunday afternoon and went on to defeat Plymouth State University, 4-1, in a non-conference field hockey game at Benedum Field.
The Pride, ranked ninth in the latest Division III national coaches poll, improve to 5-1 overall while the Panthers even their record at 3-3.
Springfield was on the board early as senior Sara Brooker (Auburn, Maine) scored at the 2:08 mark. Seniors Meghan Bascetta (Granby, Conn.) and Erin Bosch (Shoreham, N.Y.) each added a goal for the Pride, who took a 3-0 lead before the game was 12 minutes old.
Bascetta scored again eight minutes into the second half with an assist from sophomore Britney Veazie (Dexter, Maine), extending the score to 4-0. PSU senior Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass.) scored the only Panther goal with 23:56 remaining, with an assist from sophomore Heidi Hand (Portsmouth, N.H.)
Sophomore goalkeeper Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, Conn.) tallied 15 saves and allowed only one goal to earn the win for the Pride. Sophomore Katie Randall (Portsmouth, N.H.) finished with 12 saves for PSU.
Plymouth State looks to regroup from two tough losses over the weekend with three straight home games, beginning Wednesday against Endicott at Arold Field (4:00 p.m.) Springfield visits Amherst on Wednesday for a non-conference game (4:30 p.m.)
