NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Junior Amy LaFontaine scored an insurance goal eight minutes into the final period Wednesday night as the Cadets of Norwich University held on for a 3-1 win over the visiting Panthers of Plymouth State University in a women’s ice hockey game at Kreitzberg Arena.
Norwich remains unbeaten at 5-0 on the season, while PSU goes to 1-1.
NU senior Danielle Rupert scored the game’s first goal nearly 16 minutes into the opening period on an unassisted tally. Some two and a half minutes later, the Cadets went up 2-0 on sophomore Kate Barrett’s goal with LaFontaine and sophomore Amanda Gage assisting.
Plymouth State senior captain Kelly Williams (Canaan, N.H.) provided the lone goal of the second period to cut the margin to 2-1. But LaFontaine’s goal in the final frame sealed the win for Norwich.
Norwich out shot Plymouth, 31-25, for the game. NU goalie Kate Fraser made 11 saves before leaving in the second period with an injury, and her replacement, Courtney Miniter made 13 saves. Plymouth State goalie Lindsay DeLorie (Holliston, Mass.) finished with 28 saves.
The Panthers return to action on home ice this Saturday, skating against UMass Amherst in a 1:00 p.m. game at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
