NORTHFIELD, Vt. – In a dual match where five of the 10 matches ended in pins, Norwich University defeated Plymouth State University, 33-15, in collegiate wrestling action Friday evening at Andrews Hall.
The teams split the first six bouts, with PSU recording two pins and NU registering a pin and a technical fall, but the Cadets swept the last four bouts, including two by pins, to pull out the victory. Norwich is now 5-3 in dual matches, while PSU drops to 4-10.
The match started at 157 pounds, and PSU senior Dan Moskowitz (Amherst, N.H.) at 157 and Norwich junior Shaun Vacher (North Attleboro, Mass.) at 165 traded victories in the first two bouts. Senior Jon Capen (Peru, N.Y.) registered a pin to win for Norwich at 174, and senior Nate Kittredge (Vergennes, Vt.) answered for PSU with a pin in his 184-pound match. Senior Silver Oghayore (Bridgeport, Conn.) recorded a tech. fall at 197 for NU, but PSU came back again with a win by fall from freshman Shaun Wilbert (Toms River, N.J.) at heavyweight.
It was all Norwich the rest of the way, as the Cadets won the last four bouts in the four lightest weight classes to clinch the team victory. Freshman Travis James (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) at 125 and senior Dan Whelan (York, Maine) at 149 registered pins, and junior Pat Howard (South Berwick, Maine) at 133 and freshman Jay Ciuricich (Blairstown, N.J.) at 141 earned decisions.
PSU will compete again Thursday at Bridgewater State with Centenary (N.J.) and Stevens Tech (N.J.), beginning at 4:00 p.m. The Panthers will also have their final home matches of the season on Saturday (Feb. 5) against Trinity, Springfield, and Johnson & Wales (12:00 p.m.)
