NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns Saturday afternoon to pull out an 18-14 victory over Plymouth State University in a non-conference football game at Sabine Field.
Plymouth State freshman Matt Anderson (Charlton, Mass.) returned the second-half opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown and the Panthers held a 7-6 lead entering the fourth quarter.
PSU put together a 14-play drive in the fourth quarter, but it stalled following an interception at the Norwich 13-yard line. The Cadets capitalized on the Panther turnover, going 73 yards on six plays and taking a 12-7 lead on a three-yard touchdown run by sophomore Justin Collens (Manchester, Mass.) with 9:54 remaining. Senior Eric Murphy (Fair Haven, Vt.) extended the Cadet lead to 18-7 on a two-yard TD burst with 5:02 on the clock.
Plymouth State put the final points on the board as time expired when junior Tye Seastedt (Danville, N.H.), the team’s starting quarterback, caught a six-yard TD pass from senior Jimi Lampron (Rochester, N.H.)
Norwich had taken a 6-0 halftime lead on a pair of field goals by senior Adam Cardin (Worcester, Mass.)
The Cadets outgained the Panthers by a 393-208 margin, although PSU had 16 first downs to Norwich’s 15.
Sophomore Kyle Clark (Bradford, N.H.) had his best day of the year in the Panther backfield, gaining 72 yards on 17 carries (4.2 avg.) Sophomore tight end Adam Long (Plymouth, Mass.) caught a season-high eight passes for 74 yards. Junior linebacker Tim Butler (Concord, Mass.) led the Panther defense with seven tackles.
Plymouth State, 1-3, travels to Western Connecticut next Saturday (1:00 p.m.) while Norwich is home again against Alfred (1:30 p.m.)
