NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Sophomore tailback Cedric Carvalho (Darmouth, Mass.) ran for 192 yards and three touchdowns Saturday afternoon to lead Norwich University to a 41-0 win over Plymouth State University in a Freedom Football Conference game at Sabine Field.
Carvalho scored on touchdown runs of 4, 93, and 7 yards in the first half as the Cadets built a 24-0 lead at the half. The 93-yard run came as time expired in the first quarter after a Plymouth punt had pinned the Cadets at their own seven-yard line, but Carvalho rolled off right tackle and romped down the sideline for the score. The 93-yard run was the second longest in school history, behind only Winnfield Brooks‘ 95-yard scamper in 1983.
The Cadets got two field goals from junior Rhett Soltas (Brandon, Fla.) (of 39 and 18 yards), as well as a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown by senior linebacker Taylor Britto (Warwick, R.I.), a 16-yard TD run by sophomore fullback Eric Murphy (Fair Haven, VT) for his first collegiate score.
Norwich senior quarterback Ben Clark (Skowhegan, ME) completed 13 of 23 passes for 166 yards and did not throw an interception. His brother, junior wideout Josh Clark caught six balls for 117 yards. Norwich improves to 1-3 and 1-1 in the FFC with the win, while PSU falls to 0-3 and 0-1.
Panther freshman quarterback Mike Griggs (Hudson, N.H.) completed 9 of 17 passes for 91 yards and carried the ball 13 times for 27 yards to lead the Panthers.
Plymouth State travels to Western Connecticut next Saturday for an FFC affair, while Norwich visits Coast Guard for the “Little Army-Navy Game” next Saturday.
