PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Matt Meehan (Stanhope, N.J.) threw for 255 yards and three touchdowns Saturday afternoon to lead Norwich University to a 20-9 non-conference football victory over Plymouth State University at PSU’s Currier Field.
Meehan connected with freshman Pierre Garcon (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and junior Andreas Craig (Springfield, Mass.) for over 100 yards apiece, helping the Cadets improve their record to 4-0. Garcon caught six passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns, and Craig hauled in a half dozen passes for 104 yards and one TD. Meehan completed 13 of 23 for the afternoon with only one interception.
It was anyone’s game through the first 30 minutes. Norwich took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter on a 38-yard pass play from Meehan to Garcon, and an extra point kick by senior Rhett Soltas (Brandon, Fla.).
Plymouth State countered on the next possession with an 18-yard field goal by freshman Carlo Sementilli (South Salem, N.Y.), capping a 12-play, 71-yard drive. The kick was set up by a 35-yard completion from sophomore QB Tye Seastedt (Danville, N.H.) to freshman Brad Largy (Litchfield, N.H.) that gave the Panthers first-and-goal at the Norwich four-yard-line, but PSU had to settle for the field goal.
Neither team was able to score in the second quarter, but the Cadets got into the end zone on their first possession of the second half on a 22-yard pass play from Meehan to Garcon. Norwich botched the extra point attempt, but held a 13-3 advantage.
The Cadets recovered a PSU fumble later in the third quarter at the 50-yard line. Meehan hit Craig on the next play for a touchdown, and following Soltas’ kick, the visitors led 20-3.
Plymouth State scored the only points of the fourth quarter when Seastedt connected with Largy on a 30-yard TD pass. Largy finished the afternoon with five catches for 105 yards and the TD, but neither team was able to score the rest of the way.
Senior Anthony Purdy (Rutland, Vt.) led the Cadets defense with 10 unassisted tackles, while sophomore Micah Lieberman (Iselin, N.J.) had 10 tackles, including seven unassisted. Sophomore Dan Fallon (Manchester, N.H.) was the top defender for PSU, making 10 tackles, forcing a fumble and returning an interception 45 yards.
PSU, 0-4, hosts Western Connecticut next Saturday in the Homecoming contest at Currier Field (1:00 p.m.). Norwich visits Alfred next Saturday for its first Empire 8 Conference game (1:00 p.m.).
