Observers Welcome at Piano Master Classes April 17 & 19

Plymouth.N.H.—Pianist and conductor Ginger Yang Hawlek, an instructor and music camp director at the University of Maine, will conduct piano master classes at 2:30 p.m. April 17 and 12:30 p.m. April 19 at Plymouth State University. Members of the public are invited to observe Professor Hwalek working with PSU students.

Hwalek, a native of South Bend, Ind., began piano studies at age four and has been involved with music ever since–as a pianist, violist, teacher and conductor. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Indiana University and a Master of Music from Wichita State University, both in piano performance. Hawlek completed a Doctor of Music in chamber music and accompanying from Northwestern University.

Hwalek has taught at Illinois State University, University of Maine and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan. At the University of Maine, she teaches class piano, keyboard musicianship, and music history; accompanies faculty and student recitals, and directs Maine Summer Youth Music, a summer music camp for grades 6–12 housed on the campus of the University of Maine.

Hwalek is active in Music Teachers National Association and was named their 2006 Teacher of the Year . She also has a private studio of 14 piano students and is a frequent conductor of the PSU Piano Monster Concerts and Festivals.

The master classes will be held in the Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance at the Silver Center for the Arts.
