NEW LONDON, N.H. – Plymouth State College scored four runs in the eighth inning and one in the ninth to register a come-from-behind victory over Colby-Sawyer
College in non-conference baseball action Thursday afternoon at the Kelsey Athletic Fields.
The win was PSC’s ninth in the last 11 outings, improving the Panthers to 13-19 overall. Colby-Sawyer dropped its sixth straight to fall to 8-16.
The Panthers took the lead with a pair of runs in the second inning, but the Chargers answered with three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Both teams
added a pair in the seventh to make it 7-4 Colby-Sawyer, setting up PSC’s late inning comeback.
PSC sent 10 men to the plate in the top of the eighth to take the lead for good. Sophomore Jay Zinis (Manchester, N.H.) brought the Panthers to within one with a
two-RBI double to right, and classmate Matt Salokangas (New Ipswich, N.H.) followed with a double to right center to tie the contest. Three batters later, Salokangas
scored what proved to be the winning run when freshman Brandon Stocker (Sunapee, N.H.) lined out to the pitcher and the attempt to double Rob Burr (Concord, N.H.)
off second ended up in center field.
The Chargers put the tying runs on base in the bottom of the ninth as senior Shawn Herlihy led off with a single up the middle and junior Michael Mooney followed
with a walk. Freshman Tyler Martin sacrificed the runners over, but PSC junior Jeff Morgan (Laconia, N.H.) picked up his third save of the season when he induced a
foul pop up to third and struck out the final Colby-Sawyer batter on a called third strike.
Senior Arlan Freeman (Portland, Maine) picked up the win (2-0) with two scoreless innings of relief for PSC. Salokangas led the Panther offense, going 3-for-5 with
a double, triple and three runs scored, while Zinis had a pair of doubles and two runs batted in.
Herlihy, Mooney, Jon Clay and Scott Lavigne all collected two hits for Colby-Sawyer.
PSC wraps up the regular season Saturday (May 5) at Panther Field with a Little East Conference doubleheader against UMass Boston (12:00 p.m.)
