PLYMOUTH, N.H. – After three straight one-goal losses to open the season, the Plymouth State University field hockey team picked up its first victory of the campaign Thursday afternoon at Arold Field with a 2-0 victory over Granite State rival Saint Anselm College.
The Panthers outshot the Hawks 12-3 and scored a pair of second half goals to pull out the victory. PSU improves to 1-3 overall while Saint Anselm lost its fourth game in a row to fall to 2-4.
After a scoreless first half, freshman Christina Farias (East Dennis, Mass.) tallied her first career goal two minutes into the second half to put the Panthers on the scoreboard. Junior Caitlin Moran (Rowley, Mass.) gave PSU a two-goal advantage seven minutes later with her first goal of the season.
The rest was up to the Panther defense and senior goalie Kerry Brady (Jefferson, N.H.). The defense limited the Hawks to three second half shots, and Brady stopped all three to post her first career shutout. Saint Anselm goalie Lisa Bellantoni (Hanover, Mass.) registered nine saves in the loss.
Plymouth State, three-time defending Little East Conference champions, begins defense of its title Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game at UMass Dartmouth. Saint Anselm returns home to host Bryant College Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
