WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. – It was another first place finish for the Plymouth State University men’s ski team Sunday in the giant slalom event at the PSU Winter Carnival at frigid Waterville Valley Resort.
The Panther men’s squad cruised to a first place among 10 schools in the team scoring, its fourth first-place finish in four outings this season (two slalom, two GS). The PSU women’s team skied to a fourth place finish in the 10-team women’s race, matching its best result of the season.
PSU once again dominated the men’s race, with six of the top 12 finishers among the 80 skiers. Junior All-America Tyler Barlow (South Burlington, Vt.) and freshman Topher Harlow (North Conway, N.H.) led the assault, placing fourth and fifth in the two-run, combined-time event. Sophomore Rob Kiely (New London, N.H.) was the eighth place finisher, and sophomore Skip Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.), senior Garrett Lashar (Kingfield, Maine), and sophomore Matt Prendergast (Westminster, Mass.) came in 10-11-12.
Senior All-America Whitney Swaffield (Wolfeboro, N.H.) registered her best showing of the season with a third place among 65 skiers in the women’s race, her fourth straight top 10 finish. Sophomore Chantelle Heroux (Cooperstown, N.Y.) also had her top performance to date, placing 11th. PSU’s next two finishers were sophomore Kelsey Real (Lanesboro, Mass.) in 27th and freshman Amelia Hough (Gloucester, Mass.) in 30th.
The PSU men easily took the team title, finishing ahead of (in order) Boston College, UMass Amherst, Colby-Sawyer, Babson, Brown, MIT, UConn, Saint Anselm, and New England College. The order of finish in the women’s team scoring was Brown, UMass, Colby-Sawyer, PSU, Boston College, Smith, Saint Anselm, MIT, Babson and UConn.
The ski racing resumes next weekend at the Brown Winter Carnival. Saturday’s slalom will be held at Tenney Mountain (N.H.) and Sunday’s giant slalom will take place at Loon Mountain (N.H.).
