ASCUTNEY, Vt. – The Plymouth State University men’s alpine ski team won the giant slalom race for the fourth consecutive week Sunday, winning the event among 10 schools at the Boston College Winter Carnival held at Ascutney Mountain Resort.
The Panther men, who have also won three of the four slalom races this winter, had five of the top 15 finishers among the 80-plus racers on Sunday. The PSU’s women’s team overcame a DNF from its top skier to place fifth among 10 schools.
Freshman Topher Harlow (North Conway, N.H.) and junior Tyler Barlow (South Burlington, Vt.) continued to perform as two of the top ski racers in the Eastern Region. Harlow finished fifth Barlow seventh on Sunday, the seventh time in eight races this season that each has finished in the top seven. Harlow was second and Barlow third in Saturday’s slalom.
PSU’s other top men’s finishers in the giant slalom included senior Garrett Lashar (Kingfield, Maine) in 10th place, sophomore Rob Kiely (New London, N.H.) in 13th, and junior Chad Demetry (Francestown, N.H.) in 15th. They helped PSU defeat (in order of finish) Babson, Boston College, Colby-Sawyer, UMass Amherst, MIT, Brown, Saint Anselm, UConn and New England College.
Sophomore Chantelle Heroux (Cooperstown, N.Y.) was the top finisher for PSU in the women’s race as she placed 11th, matching her best GS finish of the season. Freshman Amelia Hough (Gloucester, Mass.) and junior Jessica Bouchard (Temple, Maine) placed 22nd and 26th, respectively, but senior Whitney Swaffield (Wolfeboro, N.H.), who has been PSU’s top skier in every other race this season, did not finish.
Brown edged UMass in the women’s team scoring, with the rest of the field including (in order of finish) Smith, Boston College, PSU, Colby-Sawyer, Babson, Saint Anselm, MIT and UConn.
PSU concludes the regular season next weekend in New Hampshire with the giant slalom Friday at Sunapee and the slalom Saturday at Pat’s Peak.
