PRINCETON, MASS. – The Plymouth State University ski teams finished in second and fourth place Sunday in the men’s and women’s slalom standings at Wachusett Mountain.
The Panther men’s team took second place among nine schools, finishing behind UMass Amherst, and ahead of Colby-Sawyer, Boston College and Babson among others. The Panther women finished in fourth place out of 10 teams, ending up behind UMass Amherst, Boston College, Colby-Sawyer and ahead of Brown and Smith among others.
Sophomore Melissa Caflisch (Clymer, N.Y./Northwood School) and senior Chad Demetry (Francestown, N.H.) led the Panthers with top finishes. Caflisch placed second overall in the women’s race among the 65 racers, while Demetry finished third among 80 men’s racers. Caflisch captured her third consecutive second place finish this season, while Demetry‘s third-place finish was his best performance of the year.
PSU had very solid performances all around, placing four male skiers in the top 10, while three women finished in the top 20. Freshman Josh Bedard (Laconia, N.H.) finished in fourth place, while sophomore Jason Hey (Northboro, Mass.) was sixth and senior Skip Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.) ended up in seventh. Freshman Paige Frohock (Boise, Idaho) was PSU’s second-best finisher in the women’s race finishing in 17th , while sophomore Kara Marvelli (Franconia, N.H.) was 18th.
The PSU teams return to competition next Saturday with giant slalom races at Loon Mountain in Lincoln, N.H.
