PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women’s volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday afternoon at Foley Gymnasium and finished in third place at the Cobblestone Inn Invitational, hosted by PSU.
The Panthers, who went 2-0 in pool play Friday evening, were defeated by Clark University, 3-1, in Saturday’s semifinal (30-28, 22-30, 30-23, 32-30). PSU rebounded to defeat Lasell College, 3-1, in the third-place match (30-20, 28-30, 30-18, 31-29).
Clark went on to defeat Johnson & Wales University in the championship match, 3-1. Plymouth State captured the 2002 and 2004 tournament titles, sandwiched around the 2003 championship which was claimed by Williams College.
Senior setter Amanda Bagwell (Riverside, R.I.) was Plymouth State’s representative on the All-Tournament Team. She registered 35 assists and six blocks against Clark and 40 assists against Lasell. Bagwell, a two-time Little East Conference First Team All-Star, finished with 135 assists in PSU’s four matches.
Senior Becky Ciulla (Chelmsford, Mass.) also had another solid performance for the Panthers on Saturday. She registered nine kills, seven blocks and 20 digs in the match vs. Clark, and added a weekend-high 17 kills in the victory over Lasell. Senior Kelly Landry (Nashua, N.H.) added nine kills for PSU in each match.
Freshman Sarah Spears (Meredith, N.H.) finished off a solid weekend defensively. She made 15 digs against Clark and 11 against Lasell, reaching double figures in digs in three of PSU’s four matches.
PSU, 3-1, plays in the annual Western New England College Tournament next Friday and Saturday in Springfield, Mass.
