PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Behind four second-half goals and a strong overall team performance, the Plymouth State University women’s soccer team defeated Emmanuel College 6-1 Saturday at Panther Field in the season opener.
The Panthers, 1-0-0 overall, win their first home opener in two years. The Saints drop to 2-2-0.
PSU got off to a fast start when freshman Mary Kate Cunningham (Holden, MA) scored the first goal 28 seconds into the game. Senior Katie Sheridan (West Sayville, NY) knocked in her first goal of the season off Emmanuel goalie junior Kanee Chlebda (Medway, MA) to make it 2-0 at halftime.
The Panthers notched four goals in the second half. The first by Krista Pettrey (Northfield, VT) came at the 54:48 mark, and Sheridan tallied her second of the contest on a breakaway 12 minutes later. Junior Jennifer Arena (Southboro, MA) scored the first goal of her career for PSU at the 68th minute before Emmanuel got on the board at the 76-minute mark when freshman Catherine Bruno (Pelham, NH) notched an unassisted goal. The Panthers’ final tally came when freshman Sarah Mooney (Franklin, MA) scored on a left footed cross from sophomore Casey Bishop (Topsham, Maine).
PSU goalie Beth McAloon (Bedford, NH) made three saves, while EC keeper Chlebda stopped six shots and fellow goalkeeper freshman Shawna Melin (Yokosuka, Japan) made five saves.
Plymouth State is back in action next Saturday (Sept. 13), when they face off against St. Joseph’s at 4:00 p.m. Emmanuel returns home to host MIT Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
