SCRANTON, Pa. – The Plymouth State University wrestling team earned one victory in three tries against strong competition Wednesday evening at the University of Scranton’s John J. Long, S.J., Center.
The Panthers sandwiched a 23-16 triumph over Scranton between losses to Wilkes University (22-16) and Olivet College of Michigan (27-12). The outcome leaves PSU with a 4-5 record in dual matches season, while Olivet is now 7-7, Wilkes is 2-3, and Scranton is 0-5.
Wednesday’s matches included four teams who were represented at the NCAA Division III Championships last winter. Olivet tied for 21st place, Scranton tied for 37th, Wilkes was 44th, and PSU participated but did not score.
Five Panthers registered two wins apiece Wednesday evening. Seniors Shaun Cleary (West Keansburg, N.J.) and Rick Simula (Plymouth, N.H.) collected wins against both Wilkes and Scranton and finished the night at 2-0. Cleary improved his season record to 10-4 at 141 pounds, while Simula is 3-4 at heavyweight. Freshman Brandon Black (Keene, N.H.) also won his only two bouts at 157, over Wilkes and Olivet, to maintain a share of the team lead in victories with a 13-5 record.
Senior Nate Kittredge (Vergennes, Vt.) and junior Dan Moskowitz (Amherst, N.H.), PSU’s defending New England champions, finished with 2-1 records for the evening. Kittredge improved his season mark at 174 pounds to a team-best 13-2 but suffered a 4-2 decision to Scranton’s Ron Saglimbene, who is fifth on his school’s all-time list with 51 career victories. Moskowitz upped his season record to 11-4, including a pin of Olivet’s Ken Andrews.
Three other Panthers collected one win in three attempts Wednesday – freshman Matt Friend (Jefferson, N.H.) at 125 pounds, junior David Preciado (Stoneham, Mass.) at 133, and sophomore Dean Miller (Long Valley, N.J.) at 165.
Plymouth State is now idle until Saturday, Jan. 17, when it hosts the annual PSU Invitational at Foley Gymnasium, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
