PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University swept a wrestling quad-meet Saturday afternoon at the P.E. Center Field House, defeating the University of Southern Maine, Western New England College and Roger Williams University to go into the holiday break with a 3-1 record.
The Panthers, ranked seventh in New England, started the day with a 35-9 victory over USM, came back with a 33-15 decision over WNEC, and finished the afternoon with a 24-18 triumph over Roger Williams, which came into the event ranked 10th in New England. Roger Williams is now 4-2 on the season, while USM drops to 0-3 and WNEC slips to 1-4.
Senior Nate Kittredge (Vergennes, Vt.) and freshman Brandon Black (Keene, N.H.) led the Panthers, each posting a 3-0 record for the day. Kittredge won twice at 184 pounds and once at 174 to improve his team-leading record to 11-1. Black won all three of his bouts, two at 157 and one at 165, by pinning his opponent, improving his season mark to 10-4.
Seniors Shaun Cleary (West Keansburg, N.J.) and Charlie Kenna (Concord, N.H.), junior Dan Moskowitz (Amherst, N.H.), and sophomore Dean Miller (Long Valley, N.J.) each finished 2-0 for PSU for the afternoon. Cleary won twice at 149 pounds to up his season record to 7-3, Kenna won twice at 141 to even his mark at 2-2, Moskowitz captured victories at 149 and 157 to improve to 9-3, and Miller went 2-0 at 174 to move to 4-2 on the season.
Other Panthers who collected wins Saturday included freshman Matt Friend (Jefferson, N.H.), who went 2-1 at 125 pounds; junior David Preciado (Stoneham, Mass.), who won his only match at 133; freshman Nick Gurney (Dixfield, Maine), who split a pair of matches at 197; freshman Stephen Stoddard (Glenndale, Md.), who won his only bout at 184; and junior Kyle Pietrowski (Eliot, Maine), who went 1-2 in the 197 and 285-pound weight classes.
After a break for final exams and the holidays, PSU resumes action on Sunday, Jan. 4, with a dual at Williams College (12:00 p.m.).
