PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State College scored 10 runs in the fifth inning Wednesday and went on to post a 16-4 non-conference baseball victory over Fitchburg State College at Panther Field.
Fitchburg State actually led 4-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but PSC plated 10 runs in the inning on eight hits and four walks, taking an 11-4 lead. The Panthers added three more in the sixth and two more in the seventh before the game was called.
PSC improved to 9-9-1 overall, getting back to the .500 mark for the first time since Mar. 23rd. Fitchburg State dropped to 2-13-1 overall.
Sophomore Dakota Smith (Rochester, NH) had his best game as a Panther. He went 4-for-5 with an RBI, a stolen base and three runs scored. In the fifth inning alone, Smith had two singles and two runs scored. Joining in on the Panthers’ 14-hit attack were Todd Steffanides (Fitchburg, MA), who was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI, Ben DuBois (Franklin, NH), who went 2-for-4, scored three runs and knocked in one, and Drew Leavitt (Turner, ME), who had two hits and scored a run in three at-bats.
Freshmen Jon Albertini (Franklin, MA) and Jim Arguimbau (Sharon, MA) combined the pitching duties for PSC. Albertini worked six innings and allowed four earned runs on five hits, walking one and striking out two to pick up his first career win (1-0), and Arguimbau struck out all three batters he faced in the seventh inning.
The Falcons got a two-run home run in the first inning from Matt Raiche (W.Warwick, RI), his second of the season. Jamie Paluk (Orange, MA) had two hits, including an RBI double in the third inning, and Jeff McHugh (Bourne, MA) doubled and scored in the fourth.
PSC makes the trip to Colchester, VT, on Thursday (Apr. 15) to play St. Michael’s in a non-conference game (3:30 p.m.), and returns home Saturday (Apr. 17) to host Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference doubleheader (12:00 p.m.). Fitchburg State returns home to host Amherst Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
