FORT MYERS, Florida – The Plymouth State College softball team fell to 2-6 in the annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with a pair of losses Thursday, falling to
Amherst College, 2-1, and Buffalo State, 8-5.
Amherst took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run by Meg Nelson off PSC freshman starter and losing pitcher Kristin Balles (Bedford, N.H./West
H.S.). The Panthers answered in the top of the third when Balles tripled to drive in senior Lorienne Fink (Laconia, N.H.).
The Jeffs scored the game-winning run in the fourth inning, and PSC was unable to get any more runs across the plate. The Panthers managed just four hits off
winning pitcher Lauren Peloquin. Amherst improved to 5-2.
The Panthers led 2-0 through four innings against Buffalo State, thanks in part to a home run by Balles in the third inning. The Bengals rallied for five runs in the
fifth inning and three more in the sixth to put the game away. Freshman pitcher Jes Leary (Farmington, N.H.) suffered the loss to fall to 1-2. Junior Kristen Fusick
(Windsor Locks, Conn.) had a seventh-inning double and drove in two runs for PSC.
PSC wraps up the trip with a pair of games Friday, facing Dana College (Neb.) at 4 p.m. and Bethel College (Minn.) at 6 p.m.
