PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State College women’s tennis team defeated Colby-Sawyer College in its season opener Monday, 6-3.
The victory was PSC’s first over the Chargers since 1992. The match started outdoors, but was moved inside the P.E. Center when the rain came. Colby-Sawyer drops to 0-3 on the season.
Plymouth State won four of the six singles matches. PSC winners included sophomore Cally Thorup (Cumberland, Maine) at No. 1, junior Jamie Hazard (Foster, R.I.) at No. 2, sophomore Katie Olsen (Reading, Mass.) at No. 3, and junior Sarah Kasuba (Stratford, Conn.) at No. 5. Colby-Sawyer winners in singles were freshman Jen Wood (East Longmeadow, Mass.) at No. 4 and sophomore Meegan Best (Ipswich, Mass.) at No. 6.
The Panthers took two of the three eight-game pro-sets in doubles. Thorup and Hazard won a tiebreaker at No. 1, and sophomore Lindsay Coletti (Hudson, Mass.) and Olsen won at No. 3 for PSC. Wood and senior Amy Carroll (Scituate, Mass.) won the match at No. 2 doubles for the Chargers.
PSC is at Rhode Island College at 1 p.m. Saturday for its next match. Colby-Sawyer plays again Wednesday at Lyndon State (3:30 p.m.).
