WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Freshman Mike Majesty (Chicago, Ill.) scored three goals and assisted on two others Sunday afternoon as Western New England College skated past Plymouth State University, 7-2, in a non-conference men’s ice hockey game at the Olympia Ice Center.
WNEC earned the victory with five power play goals, including two in each of the first two periods. Majesty tallied all three of his goals with the man advantage as the Golden Bears improved to 2-7-2 overall.
The hosts jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first period, with senior Nick DeBaggis (Topsfield, Mass.) scoring the only Panther goal, with assists from classmate Rory Nickerson (West Chatham, Mass.) and junior Goose LaCroix (Moretown, Vt.). WNEC extended its lead to 6-2 in the second period, with junior Andy Herlihy (Bow, N.H.) tallying an unassisted marker for PSU’s only goal of the middle frame.
The Golden Bears rounded out the scoring in the third period with their fifth power play goal.
Plymouth State finished with a 36-27 advantage in shots on goal, but sophomore Jamie Babineau (Medway, Mass.) made 34 saves for WNEC to pick up his first win of the season. Junior goalies Trevor Cherry (Greenland, N.H.) and Brendan Fahy (Plymouth, Mass.) combined to make 20 saves for the Panthers.
The outcome stopped PSU’s three-game winning streak and dropped the Panthers to 7-4-1 overall. These two teams will play again on Feb. 22 at Waterville Valley (N.H.) in the season finale and the official ECAC Northeast meeting.
PSU is back in action this Saturday with a non-conference game at Plattsburgh State (7:00 p.m.) Plattsburgh (7-4-1) is ranked 14th in the latest USCHO.com Division III Men’s Poll.
