FORT MYERS, Florida – Coe College (Iowa) held off a furious Plymouth State College comeback in the top of the seventh inning Sunday night, defeating the
Panthers 10-9 and earning a sweep of the doubleheader in the opening games of the annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
In the first game, junior Jeff Morgan (Laconia, N.H.) held Coe scoreless on two hits through five inning but couldn’t get out of the sixth inning. Coe exploded for four
runs in the sixth inning and six more in the seventh en route to a 10-3 victory.
Freshman Rob Burr (Concord, N.H.) led the Panther offense, going 2-for-3 with a home run in the opener. Sophomore Scott Hodsdon (Somersworth, N.H.) also
clouted a home run, and senior Dakota Smith (Rochester, N.H.) and sophomore Matt Price (Epping, N.H.) added two hits apiece.
Burr also paced PSC in the nightcap, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Sy Tebbetts (Hollis, N.H.) smacked a three-run home run in the seventh inning to
bring PSC to within a run, but Coe held on for the win. Junior Kevin Locke (Pike, N.H.) took the loss for PSC.
The Panthers’ scheduled twinbill Monday against Roger Williams was rained out. The two schools were attempting to reschedule the games for later in the week.
PSC’s next games are Tuesday vs. Bethel College (Minn.).
