WALTHAM, Mass. – Plymouth State College is in seventh place among 18 teams after the second day of competition at the New England Division II-III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted by Bentley College.
The Panthers scored points in five of the events that were held Saturday, including two relays. The competition continues with the remaining events Sunday, with preliminaries held in the afternoon and finals in the evening.
Host Bentley College leads the field with 624 points, followed by Keene State (559), UMass Dartmouth (393), Brandeis (377), Simmons (335), Gordon (330), and PSC (286). Bridgewater State (265), Saint Michael’s (254) and Eastern Connecticut (226) round out the top 10.
Senior Allison Bregy (Camden, Maine) was PSC’s top performer on Saturday, bringing home fifth place in the finals of the 400 yard individual medley with a school record time of 5:02.48. Bregy was 13th in the 500 free on Friday.
Senior Amy Bernier (Bristol, Conn.), who placed 10th in the 100 butterfly on Friday, captured eighth place Saturday in the 50 fly with a time of 29.32. Junior Caitlin O’Connor (Rochester, N.H.), who was eighth in the 50 freestyle on Friday, finished 10th in the 200 free on Saturday with a time of 2:08.51.
PSC continues to do well in the relay events. The 800 free relay team of sophomore Ann Winters (Chester, N.H.), Bernier, O’Connor and Bregy placed fifth in 8:43.00, and the 200 medley relay team of sophomore Scarlette Scarborough (Salem, N.H.), Bregy, Bernier and O’Connor took seventh place in 2:01.44.
PSC finished sixth as a team among 17 schools at last year’s championships.
