FT. MYERS, Fla. – The Plymouth State College baseball team dropped the final two games on its spring trip Friday, losing a doubleheader to Coe College (Iowa) in the annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
The Panthers fell in the opener, 8-4, and then dropped the nightcap, 4-2. PSC completes the season-opening trip with a 3-7 record, while Coe improves to 4-5.
Plymouth State continued its strong offense in a losing cause in the opener with eight hits. Juniors Jay Zinis (Manchester, N.H./West) and Robbie Burr (Concord, N.H.) had two hits apiece and classmate Matt Salokangas (New Ipswich, N.H.) cracked a double. The Panthers managed only six hits in the nightcap, including a pair of singles by Zinis.
Sophomore Josh Forest (Richmond, VA/Manchester (NH) Trinity) started the opener for PSC and took the loss (0-2), while junior Jason Egan (Sharon, Mass.) suffered his first setback of the season (0-1) in the nightcap.
PSC is scheduled to play the home opener next Friday (Mar. 29) at Panther Park against Norwich University (3:00 p.m.), but that may depend on field conditions. The Little East Conference opener is slated for Saturday, Mar. 30, with a twinbill at UMass Dartmouth (12 p.m.).
