HOOKSETT, N.H. – Senior Nick Nugent (Hudson, N.H.) totaled two goals and one assist Sunday to lead the Southern New Hampshire University hockey team to a
7-1 victory over Plymouth State College in the consolation game of the 2001 PAL Cup at Tri-Town Arena.
SNHU improved to 2-1-0 with the win, while the Panthers dropped to 1-4-0. Saint Anselm College claimed the tournament championship with a 5-3 victory over the
College of Saint Scholastica in the championship game.
The Penmen controlled the special teams play against the Panthers, scoring two shorthanded goals and a power play goal, and once during a four-on-four
Freshman Kurt Lytle (Smithfield, RI) opened the scoring for SNHU just 3:17 into the game, and the Penmen opened up a 3-0 lead after senior Ryan Frew
(Concord, NH) and Nugent scored less that four minutes apart late in the opening stanza.
SNHU controlled the second period, outshooting the Panthers 16-3 and taking a 5-0 lead following goals by senior Nick Ianniello (Brick, NJ) and freshman Pat
Doherty (Wakefield, MA).
Nugent’s second goal of the day, a shorthanded effort at 4:27 of the third period, gave the Penmen a 6-0 lead, before the Panthers got on the scoreboard with a
power play goal by freshman Kyle Poirier (Concord, NH) just 13 seconds later. Sophomore Michael Flynn (Franklin, MA) closed out the scoring for SNHU with his third
goal of the year.
Senior Chris Vokes (Auburn, MA) stopped 17 shots for the Penmen, while senior Larry Forgue (Nashua, NH) made 35 saves for the Panthers.
PSC will look to rebound with a non-conference road game Tuesday (Nov. 27) at New England College in Henniker, N.H. (7:00 p.m.).
