BABSON PARK, Mass. — Senior Jill Matteson (Chatham, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal midway through the second half and junior goalie Carmen Villanueva (East Schodack, N.Y.) made several key saves down the stretch to lead the visiting Plymouth State College Panthers to a 9-8 victory over host Babson College in non-conference women’s lacrosse action on Tuesday evening.
In a game that featured six ties and seven lead changes, Babson (0-2) built an early 4-2 lead behind two goals from junior Erica Burrill (Mendon, Mass.). Plymouth State (3-1) then came storming back with three straight scores, including the third and fourth of the game by junior Katie Sheridan (West Sayville, N.Y.), to take a 5-4 lead. However, the Beavers responded with goals from senior captain Ashley Andre (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and sophomore Alexa Rad (Upper Brookville, N.Y.) in the final two minutes of the half to take a 5-4 advantage into the break.
The two teams traded goals during the first five minutes of the second half, with Babson eventually pulling ahead, 8-7 on Andre’s second score with 25:37 remaining. Plymouth State then tied the game on a free-position goal by sophomore Annmarie Guglielmo (Gansevoort, N.Y.) with 22:20 left, and then took the lead for good when senior Melissa Cotton (Osterville, Mass.) fed Matteson in front of the net for the game-winner.
That would prove to be all Villanueva would need, as she made eight of her 17 saves in the second half to clinch the 9-8 victory. Her final stop came with 52 seconds remaining in regulation, as she went low to deny a free position shot by Babson sophomore Erin Conroy (Old Greenwich, Conn.).
Sheridan finished with four goals to lead the Panthers, while freshman Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass.) notched a pair. Freshman Bethany Brown (Norwich, Conn.) also scored once for PSC.
Burrill, Rad, Andre, and senior Deb Morris (Canton, Mass.) each scored two goals apiece for Babson, while sophomore goalie Margaret Schlachter (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) finished with 13 saves in net.
PSC plays another non-conference road game Wednesday evening at Springfield College (7:00 p.m.).
