PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Paul Dietterle (Newmarket, N.H.) broke a 2-2 tie with 20 minutes remaining in the second half Saturday evening,
leading Plymouth State College to a 3-2 victory over Oswego State (N.Y.) University in the second game of the Best Inn Men’s Soccer Kick-Off Classic at
PSC was forced to come from behind to pull out the win. After taking a 1-0 lead in the opening minute of the game, the Panthers fell behind and needed
a pair of second-half goals to come away with the victory.
Senior Sal Friello (West Haven, Conn.) converted PSC’s first goal just 59 seconds into the contest with a header off a cross from senior Rob Ball
(Rockaway, N.J.). But Oswego took over the next 20 minutes, with senior Derek Popovich (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) connecting on both goals, the first at the 11:58
mark and again at 19:00.
Oswego maintained its lead until midway through the second half, when Ball rammed home a rebound with 31 minutes on the second-half clock. Then
Dietterle finished off a play for the game-winner, with sophomore Matt Albert (Charlton, N.Y.) picking up an assist.
PSC junior keeper Brad Wilby (Haddonfield, N.J.) was solid in goal, making four saves. Sophomore John Spuhler (Fulton, N.Y.) was credited with six
saves for the Lakers.
Oswego State, 2-1-1, will face Norwich Sunday at 12 noon on the second day of the tourney, while Plymouth State, 1-0-0, will match up against
Springfield at 3:00 p.m.
