WORCESTER, Mass. – Plymouth State College’s wrestling team defeated Worcester Polytechnic Institute in a dual meet Wednesday evening, 19-18,
at WPI’s Alumni Gym.
With the win, Plymouth State, ranked #7 in New England Division III, improves to 8-6. WPI continues to have a tough-luck season and is now 1-7-1.
This represents WPI’s third one-point loss of the season. It was also the first win for a Dave Carlson-coached team at WPI.
It was a tight battle, as after six bouts, matters were all squared at 9-9, with each team capturing three decisions apiece. Winning for WPI were senior
co-captain Willie Welsh at heavyweight, senior co-captain Nick Macsata at 125, and freshman Colin Pacelli at 149. Panther winners included sophomore
Nate Kittredge (Vergennes, Vt.) at 197, freshman Charlie Kenna (Concord, N.H.) at 133, and junior Dave Brown (North Andover, Mass.) at 141.
The Panthers then gained too solid an edge in matches #7 and #8. At 157, sophomore Rich Moscowitz (Amherst, N.H.) major-decisioned sophomore
Paul Blanchard 14-3, and then in the big match of the night, junior Chris Villa (Monmouth Jct., NJ) pinned freshman Geoff Vietch at 2:40 to give the Panthers
a commanding 19-9 lead with only two bouts remaining.
At 174, WPI senior Steve Hitchcock won a 2-1 decision over Moses Cerritos (Naples, Fla.) . At 184, WPI’s Dave Capone accepted a forfeit decision,
but PSC held on for the 19-18 victory.
The Panthers are now idle until Saturday, Feb. 3rd, when they host Springfield, Trinity and Johnson & Wales at Foley Gymnasium in the final home
contests of the season (1 p.m.)
