BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Junior Robin Hartman (Santa Maria, Cal.) netted four goals and added a pair of assists in leading Plymouth State College to a 17-7 victory over New England Women’s Lacrosse Alliance rival Bridgewater State College Saturday at Swenson Field.
PSC jumped out to a 8-1 lead in the first 20 minutes of the contest, and led 9-3 at the half. The Bears countered with the first two goals of the second half and were within five (12-7) with 13:45 remaining, but the Panthers tallied the final five goals to put the game away.
The Panthers and Bears have met in the NEWLA Championship game the past two years, with BSC winning in 1999 and PSC in 2000. Saturday’s game was officially a non-conference match, because the teams are in different NEWLA divisions.
Senior Chrystn Pitt (Freeport, Maine) and freshmen Katie Sheridan (West Sayville, N.Y.) and Michelle Norton (Sandwich, Mass.) also picked up three goals apiece for the Panthers. Sophomore Heather Adey (Nashua, N.H.) added two goals and two assists, and senior Courtney O’Sullivan (East Kingston, N.H.) chipped in with a goal and three assists.
The Bears were led by Jen Cullen, who scored three goals, and Paula Habel, who had two goals and two assists. Stacie Dufour registered a goal and two assists, and Melanie Medeiros accounted for BSC’s other score.
PSC goaltenders Brenna Matarazzo (Salem, N.H.) and Carmen Villanueva (East Schodack, N.Y.) combined to make five saves for the win. Bridgewater State netminder Danielle Bean posted 12 stops.
Plymouth State has won four in a row to improve its record to 4-1, while Bridgewater State drops to 2-5. With PSC’s home game on Monday against New England College cancelled due to snow on Arold Field, the Panthers will play next on Tuesday (Apr. 10) at 7 p.m. in Worcester, Mass., against Trinity College (Conn.).
