SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior Chrystn Pitt (Freeport, Maine) scored the game-winning goal 31 seconds into the overtime period Thursday night to lead the Plymouth State College women’s lacrosse team past Springfield College, 13-12, at Benedum Field.
PSC overcame a 5-1 halftime deficit by scoring 11 goals in the second half, including four by freshman Katie Sheridan (West Sayville, N.Y.). Sophomore Heather Adey (Nashua, N.H.) tallied three goals while junior Robin Hartman (Santa Maria, Cal.) and freshman Michelle Norton (Sandwich, Mass.) added two apiece.
Senior Emily Kiablick and freshman Katherine Lawrence led Springfield with three goals apiece. Kiablick scored twice with less than four minutes remaining and Lawrence sent the game into overtime with an unassisted goal with 43 seconds left on the clock. Senior Gianna Curiale added four assists for the Pride.
Plymouth State split the goaltending duties. Freshman Carmen Villanueva (East Schodack, N.Y.) made five saves before being replaced by graduate student Brenna Matarazzo (Salem, N.H.), who made 10 saves. Molly Arey turned away 14 shots for Springfield.
Springfield, 2-1, hosts Babson this Saturday (Mar. 31) at Benedum Field (1 p.m.). PSC, also 2-1, is scheduled to host Lasell College in the home opener and New England Women’s Lacrosse Alliance debut next Thursday (Apr. 5), but that is likely to be rescheduled due to snow on Arold Field.
