WELLESLEY, Mass. – Plymouth State College opened the 2000-01 women’s swimming and diving season Saturday with a fourth-place finish at the annual Wellesley Relays.
Host Wellesley College was the overall team winner, finishing with 280 points. Babson College was second with 140, followed by Westfield State with 110 and Plymouth State with 86.
The top performers for the Panthers were the divers. Freshmen Becky Huntington (Hampstead, N.H.) and Jen Crescenzi (Killingworth, Conn.) combined to place first in the one-meter diving and finish runner-up in the three-meter diving.
PSC’s top swimming performances were in the 300-yard butterfly and 400-yard freestyle relays. The group of freshman Scarlette Scarborough (Salem, N.H.), junior Allison Bregy (Camden, Maine), junior Amy Bernier (Bristol, Conn.) and freshman Katie Koch (Jeffersonville, Vt.) teamed together in both events, finishing third in both races.
“I’m very pleased with our performances,” said PSC head coach Al Switzer. “The primary purpose of this meet is to find out as much as we can about the swimmers and divers, and where we are after four weeks of practice. We feel that over the course of the year, this team can come a long way.”
PSC opens the dual meet season next Saturday with the annual encounter at Westfield State (1 p.m.). The home opener is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 15, vs. Salem State (6 p.m.)
